Follow-Up: The Difference Between An Enquiry And A Booked Job
Getting the enquiry is the easy half. The bit most shops drop — and the bit that decides whether the diary actually fills — is what happens in the next 48 hours.
I've audited a lot of automotive funnels. The single most common reason a working ad campaign doesn't translate into booked work isn't the ad. It isn't the landing page. It's what happens after the enquiry lands in the inbox.
The follow-up gap
Typical pattern: enquiry comes in at 7pm on a Tuesday. The shop owner sees it Wednesday lunchtime. Replies Wednesday evening with "thanks, can you send a photo". Customer doesn't see it until Thursday morning. They've already booked elsewhere or gone cold.
That's not a marketing problem. That's a process problem. And it's costing you 30–50% of bookable jobs.
What good follow-up actually looks like
- Auto-reply within minutes. Confirms the enquiry, sets expectations ("Ash will be in touch within a few working hours"), and asks for any missing info up front.
- Personal reply same working day. By the actual person, not a template. WhatsApp works brilliantly for trade jobs.
- A second nudge 48 hours later if they go quiet. Not pushy. "Just checking you got my reply — happy to book you in or answer anything else."
- A final nudge a week later. "If now's not the right time, no worries — drop me a line whenever you're ready."
Why most shops don't do this
Because they're busy. They're in the bay, hands dirty, phone face-down. Which is exactly why follow-up has to be set up once, not chased manually every time. The auto-reply is automated. The nudges are templates. The personal reply is the only bit that needs your actual time.
The numbers shift
The same campaign with the same ad spend will book roughly twice the work with proper follow-up vs without. That's not a marginal gain — that's the difference between "this isn't really working" and "I need to take a week off bookings".
If you don't have time to set it up
That's literally what I do. Every funnel I build for clients has the follow-up baked in from day one — auto-reply, sequencing, the template library, the lot. Tell me about your shop or call 07527 001612.
