Why Shared Leads Are Killing Your Bodyshop's Profit
If you're paying for leads that also went to three other shops down the road, you're not buying enquiries — you're buying a race to the bottom.
Most UK bodyshops I speak to have tried one of the big lead platforms at some point. WhoCanFixMyCar, ClickMechanic, the local "get 3 quotes" sites. The pitch sounds reasonable — pay a small fee, get an enquiry, win the job. In practice it almost never works out that way.
You're not the only one getting the lead
The whole business model relies on selling the same enquiry to multiple shops. Three to five is normal. The driver gets a flood of texts within minutes and picks whoever quotes lowest. You're effectively bidding against shops you've never met, on a job you can't properly see, for a customer who's been trained to expect a discount.
It's not a lead. It's a lottery ticket.
The numbers usually don't work
Let's say you pay £8 per shared lead and convert one in eight. That's £64 cost per booked job before you've quoted anything. Add the time to write the quote, the back-and-forth, the no-shows, and the fact that the customer chose you because you were cheapest — your margin's gone before the prep work starts.
What works better
Run your own enquiry system. That means:
- Local ads (Meta or Google) that go only to your shop, in your van's working radius
- A landing page that talks about your work, your before/afters, your warranty
- A short enquiry form — name, vehicle, area of damage, a photo
- A follow-up sequence that books the inspection without you typing it every time
The cost per enquiry is usually higher on paper. The cost per booked job is dramatically lower, because nobody else is quoting against you and the customer chose you specifically.
What "your own enquiry" actually looks like
The bodyshops I work with typically get 15–40 enquiries a month from a £100–£160 ad spend. Roughly half are good fits. Of those, the ones that follow up properly book around 60–70% of them. That's a much healthier funnel than shared leads, and it builds your name in the area at the same time.
Bottom line
Shared leads aren't free money. They're a treadmill that trains you to compete on price with shops you don't respect, on jobs you can't see, for customers who don't care who does the work. If you want a full diary at a margin that actually pays the bills, you need your own funnel.
